Award-Winning Boutique Hotel

A Short Walk to the Convention Center

Charming and one-of-a-kind, The Equus is Waikīkī’s last family-owned and operated boutique hotel offering true Hawaiian hospitality at an unbeatable price. Reminiscent of Hawaii’s paniolo history, the hotel and its rooms are designed with an equestrian flair and furnished with antique east-Asian decor. While a rare, quiet getaway in Waikīkī, guests will discover there’s plenty to do nearby, whether it’s shopping and dining at Ala Moana, one of the nation’s largest shopping malls, spending the day in the sun at Magic Island Beach Park, or sailing at the nearby Ala Wai marina. We also encourage our guests to make the beautiful drive to our sister property, Hawai’i Polo Club up on the North Shore, to watch the seasonal polo matches, take polo lessons, or enjoy a spectacular horseback trail ride. Comfortable, timeless, and personable, The Equus is truly a hidden gem in the heart of Honolulu.

HISTORY OF THE
HAWAIIAN PANIOLO

When dreaming up an image of Hawaii, most people think of hula dancers on pearly white beaches or surfers on aqua waves. But a rider on horseback is just as Hawaiian as either of those scenes. Cattle have been in the Hawaiian islands since the late 1700s, when an English explorer brought them to King Kamehameha I as a present. When the cattle populations grew out of control, the king hired cattle herders from Spanish California to train Hawaiians in their craft. And so the culture of the Hawaiian paniolo was born!

If you want to see a modern-day paniolo, head on up to the North Shore, home of the Hawai‘i Polo Club. Every guest checking in during the summer season receives two complimentary admission tickets to the polo matches held there.
